IndexedDB: Since Web Databases are getting nixed
Since the WC3 has stopped maintaining their spec on web databases, it's time to look into what IS being maintained: IndexedDB. It's more complex, but it doesn't depend on SQLite. The WC3 doesn't see SQLite as standardized enough in browser implementation to continue using it.
IndexedDB is similar to a database, including key's, values and indexes, but it's ability to act as a relational database has yet to be thoroughly shown in use (As far as I've been able to find).
So far, it's only supported in:
- Internet Explorer using a prototype implementation
- Firefox 4.0 Beta 10+
- Google Chrome 8.0.522 (dev) and later
- No support on Opera or Safari
Here is an example of it's usage: http://msdn.microsoft.com/de-de/scriptjunkie/gg679063.aspx
Note that Web Databases are perfectly acceptable to use for Mobile Safari (and especially in PhoneGap for iOS development) and for Android browsers.
